Naughty Baby

Jameson is getting stronger and stronger. Here he shows off his standing abilities. Again, this video was flipped, but then in uploaded and flipped back. Sorry.

He loves diaper changes.

Sleeping with the kitty. They slept together for two hours!

Listen carefully. I was petting the cat right before I turned on the camera, and so I called Jameson "kitty". It happens.

Playing with the rattle grandma sent. He just holds on; no shaking yet.

This is the naughty baby part. This is what happens when we leave him alone for a few seconds. Doesn't he look proud?

Okay, it was all Daddy's doing, but isn't he adorable? And in case you don't know, the orange tip means it's a fake gun. He won't get a real one until he's seven or so :)

After all that naughtiness, he needed a bath. He looks scared, but he really does like bathtime.

And the joys of living in Tucson. That's a lizard in the sink. He couldn't climb the sides.

Two Months

At one month, I was shocked that my baby was already a month old. Now I can't believe it's only been two months! (plus a day; we had to clean yesterday, not blog) Jameson is growing and changing so much every day, and it's getting hard to remember a time without him.

I want to keep up with the milestones so I can remember what he can and can't do.

By two months your baby should be able to:

Smile in response to your smile.
Oh yea. I love the smiles.

Respond to a bell in some way, such as startling, crying, quieting.
We have no doubt that he can hear, but noises don't bother him very much. Nathan loves scaring him with a loud clap, but sometimes Jameson really makes daddy work for that jump!

By two months your baby will probably be able to:

Vocalize in ways other than crying.
Yup. He's cooing and gooing more every day. Sometimes he gets on a rhythm and repeats the same sound for a minute or more. And he always talks to something. The sheep dangling above his chair; the window, a stack of diapers, anything.

On stomach, lift head 45 degrees.
That's chump stuff. He's been doing that since birth.

By two months your baby may even be able to:

Hold head steady when upright.
Just because he can doesn't mean he always does. He holds his head up and looks around when he wants to, but he sometimes just decides to slump it forward or back, or even better, groove around and shake that little head to some music only he can hear.

On stomach, raise chest, supported by arms.
He loves doing this, especially if he's laying on daddy's chest.

Roll over
Sometimes. He's rolled from belly to back three times. I suppose I need to be giving him more tummy time.

Grasp a rattle held to the backs or tips of fingers.
Barely. He holds it for a few seconds then lets go without ever really noticing that it was there.

Pay attention to an object as small as a raisin.
I have no idea. And I don't even know how to check. Is he staring at my hand or the raisin?

Reach for an object.
Maybe. I've seen a few swipes at the toys on his chair that seem deliberate, but it's very hard to tell.

Say "Ah-goo" or similar vowel-consonant combination.
Ah-goo is his favorite. Coo-goo is occasionally heard.

By two months your baby may possibly be able to:

Smile spontaneously.
Love the smiles. These come most often right after a dirty diaper comes off. He loves being clean and naked.

Bring both hands together.
On purpose? His hand wavings still seem pretty random. but those hands do get clasped together pretty often.

On stomach, lift heat 90 degrees.
It's wobbly, but he can do it.

Laugh out loud.
He's laughed a couple times, but only in his sleep. I can't wait for the first real laugh!

Squeal in delight.
Yes! He's just started a few days ago. He squeals at his toys when they swing (he kicks his feet pretty hard to make them swing).

Follow an object across 180 degrees of motion.
Actually, he can do more than 180 degrees. He'll sit in his chair and watch me get up and walk around. If I go behind him he turns his head and rolls his eyes back to find me!

So there you have it. At two months, Jameson is big (13 lbs 2 oz as of Monday), strong, talkative and adorable. But maybe I'm biased.

A Momentous Occasion

This is why I have this blog. I want to have this recorded for posterity. Last night Jameson didn't really want to fall asleep, but he finally went down around 1 AM. And then he slept until 8 this morning.

Seven hours. He slept for seven hours.

And then, after a full belly, a couple diaper changes, and some time talking to the insects in his mobile, he went back to sleep for four more hours.

I love you, Jameson.

And now some cuteness. Jameson was full of smiles, but he decided to stop as soon as I got the camera out. BTW, that's Futurama playing in the background.

Footsie pj's. So sweet.

Nathan took Jameson for a walk around the track. All bundled up since it's starting to get a tad chilly sometimes.

And Nathan snuggling with Jasmine. She loves it.

Getting bigger every day...

So cute! More playing.

Nathan wants Jameson to be older than he is. So Jameson gets to pet the cat:

And fly through the air

And walk.

Jameson loved the attention, and don't worry, he wasn't really hurt at the end. Just scared.

Administrative Stuff

I finally fixed the email notification thing. If you want to receive emails, you need to join the JamesonIrl google group. I sent invitations to most of my address book, but if I missed you, just let me know. And if you don't want emails, don't join the group. Or just ignore them.

Also, a few of you were asking about comments. You can comment on the posts by clicking the word "comments" at the end of the post. I plan on keeping this as a record for Jameson to see when he's older, so feel free to leave him messages!

Testing

I'm trying to set up a better email notification. Just a test.

Lots of Fun

Being a little burrito. He doesn't like to be swaddled much any more, but we thought we'd try.

Aunt Laura came over for the day and he decided to cry while I was in the bathroom. This is what I found when I came out. Apparently this was the only position that he liked. Super Baby!

So full, so sleepy, so much drool.

We've starting taking Jameson out for a few walks. He usually konks out before we leave the driveway.

This is what we found when we got back. Don't mind the weeds.

Continuing on the theme of inappropriate foods, Nathan offered a smoothie. Jameson just loved the attention.

And a few gurgles and smiles....

Dad's Fun

Cuddling with Dad (and finding that thumb!)

Cuddling with the cat. Jasmine was very conflicted here. She doesn't really like Jameson, but she was getting attention from Nathan. Jameson was just confused.

And a couple pictures taken by Dad:

Breakthrough!

I'd like to share a video from a few days ago. I was trying to get Jameson to play, and he totally wasn't getting it. I don't blame him. Would you be very interested in a bouncing duck?

But just a few days later...

He plays! I haven't tried the duck again, but the toys on his chair will occupy him for up to 15 minutes. It's wonderful. He prefers the cow to the sheep or pig, but he hasn't figured out how to make it make noise yet.

(Note: I have this video turned the right way on my hard drive, but every time I upload it, it goes back. So just turn your head.)

And some adorable after-bath photos.

My Favorite Moments

I'm working on getting Jameson to sleep in his crib so that in a few months we can have our bedroom all to ourselves again. I've been changing his diaper elsewhere, and trying to put him down in the crib a few times a day. Today was the first time he fell asleep in it!

It took him about 15 minutes to fall asleep, but he did it on his own. During that time, I got to enjoy my new favorite activity -- watching him when he doesn't know I'm there.

As soon as I put him down, I started loading the dishwasher and cleaning the kitchen, but I kept sticking my head in his room. He spent a few minutes staring at the bear (who is strapped to the bars, don't worry) then a few minutes staring at the wall, then a few minutes fussing before he finally fell asleep. I'd stick my head in every time I heard a sound, and stood there for three or four minutes watching him kick his little feet and make the little coughing sounds he does when he's not very happy. But he calmed himself down, got from his side to his back, and dozed off.

Standing there, I can't help but remember being in his position. I have memories from early childhood of being surprised by my parents. I would turn around, and there they were. Not talking, not trying to get my attention, just watching. I'm sure they did it hundreds of times without me catching them. And of course there are memories of them just showing up at the right time -- who knows how long they had been watching, waiting for me to need them. If you're reading this, Mom and Dad, thanks.

This is a very grown-up feeling, and the time when I feel most like a parent. I am standing there, focused 100% on him, ready to pick him up, change him, feed, him, rock him, or just hold him if he needs it. But he doesn't need it yet. And so I wait. And he had no idea that I'm there.

I feel this is one more way that God gives us glimpses of Him. Certainly God is much more proactive in our lives than I am in Jameson's life right now, but I don't always feel that. I'm sure those few minutes of fussing while he tried to get from his side to his back were very frustrating for Jameson. He felt alone. But he wasn't. Sometimes I need to remember that I'm not alone as well.

And now on to more fun stuff. Nathan doesn't buy waiting 'til six months for solid foods. Jameson got to suck on a corn cob. He was very confused.

He spent most of yesterday asleep. I couldn't bear to move him even though there are at least four "rules" violations here. Oh well.

Waking up. Strong little fists.

And in non-baby news, Nathan got shot.

By a pepper ball gun. He's in training to teach defensive tactics, and they have to experience these things, for some reason. Luckily the pepper spray wore off fast, but the hits might leave scars. He's so proud.
